What are meta tags?

If you want to improve the on-page SEO for your blog, meta tags are one of the most vital things that you should pay attention to. At its core, meta tags are just HTML tags that tell search engines some crucial information about your page.

In the list given below, we have listed out the most important meta tags for any webpage -

  • Meta title
  • Meta description
  • Meta keywords
  • Meta categories
  • Meta author, etc.

How to use the meta tag checker?

To use our free SEO metadata checker tool all you need to have is the link of the test webpage. Once you have that, simply enter the link in our meta tags analyzer tool and click the “analyze” button. The tool will now report the following metadata contents of the webpage.

Analyzing the report:

Meta title:

The meta title is the title of your webpage. Your meta title should be short (under 10-15 words) but should be strictly oriented to the topic of your content.

Meta Description:

Meta description is the description that we add to a website. From the meta description, the search engine bots get a summary of the page’s content. It should be around 150 characters long.

Meta Keywords:

If the webpage under test contains any meta keywords, they will show up in this section. Meta keywords are very important for ranking and from the meta keywords the search engines get a hint about the keywords that one wants to rank their website on.

If the page you are testing doesn’t contain any meta keywords the SEO meta tags checker will simply report “Not found”.

Meta viewport:

From the meta viewport, the search engine comes to know about the responsiveness of a site. Search engines like Google mark it an important condition to rank which means a page that is properly optimized for different screen sizes (most importantly for mobile, desktop and tablets) has a better chance of ranking than a non-responsive site given other criteria remain the same.

For most web pages, you’ll find the meta viewport tag reporting: “width=device-width, initial-scale=1”. Having this meta viewport tag on your web pages suggests that it is responsive.

Meta robots:

The “meta robots” tags are totally for search engines to instruct them what they can do with the page. It contains some important parameters which tell the bots whether to index the page or not, whether the links are to be followed or not, etc.

If you find the term “follow” to appear in the meta robots section, it means that search engines can follow and discover new links from the current webpage.

If the term “index” appears here, it means that the search engine can crawl and index the page or in other word, the page can appear in search results.

Meta author:

The meta author reports the name of the author of the page. This meta tag are mostly used for blog posts or articles, etc.
