Whois Domain Lookup

While purchasing any domain name, the buyer has to provide their personal details due to the ICANN  rule. Some of the information about the domain owner can be accessed using a Whois Domain Lookup tool.

Free Whois Domain Lookup:

If you want to know whom a particular domain name belongs to, you can use our Whois Domain Lookup tool to check that for free.

How to use the domain owner lookup tool?

To get information about the domain registrar using our domain registration lookup tool, follow the steps as mentioned:

  • Enter the name of the domain which you’re willing to check. Make sure you enter only the domain name, not the link of any webpage.

For example, if you want to check the details about the ownership of “https://example.com”, enter “example.com” in the toolbox, don’t enter anything like “https://example.com/page4”, also don’t enter any subdomain.

  • Click on the “lookup” button to get a handful of data about the domain owner.

Results and their meanings:

The details about the domain ownership will be published under a table named “Whois Data”.

Domain name:

The first thing that you’ll get to see in the table is the domain name. It is the exact same domain you searched for.

Registrar:

Check this section to get information about the domain registrar.

Domain Registrar is the company who has registered your domain in the ICANN database.

If you own a domain, you can enter your domain name in the tool to check it. The whois website lookup tool is likely to report your domain registrar to be the same company from whom you had purchased that domain. If not, that means your domain was registered using a 3rd party domain register.

Godaddy, Namecheap are some of the leading domain registrars.

Owner:

In the owner section, you’ll find the name of the person or organization who had purchased the domain / whom the domain belongs to.

If you can’t see the name of the owner and instead see a message that reads, “Redacted for Privacy Purposes” - it means the name of the owner is not visible to the public.

Creation date:

The date when the domain was first registered is reflected in ‘creation date’.

Expiration Date:

Domains have a time period after which they expire, unless renewed. The date on which your domain will expire is called its expiration date. Our tool reports not only the expiration date but also the time on which the domain is going to expire.

To be on the safe side and not lose access to your domain, it’s always advised to renew your domain before the expiration date.

Updated date:

Whenever any details about your domain name or registration details are updated, the date is reflected in the ‘updated date’. The ‘updated date’ section can also show the date and time on which the domain was renewed.

DNSSEC:

DNSSEC, which stands for Domain Name System Security Extensions, reports whether the domain’s DNS data is protected by DNSSEC protection.

If you find the DNSSEC status to be in “unsigned” for a domain, it means that the domain name server’s data is not protected by DNSSEC.

States:

You can get to know about the current state of your domain in this section. This is also known as domain status code. There may be one or more data in this field for your domain. Below we have listed some domain status codes that are commonly found for domains.

clientTransferProhibited: This status code indicates that you can’t transfer this domain to any other domain registrar. This restriction is implemented to stop any kind of unauthorized domain transfer to your account into any hacker’s account.

However, it also restricts the owner to move their domain to a new platform.

clientUpdateProhibited: This restriction is implemented on your domain if the registrar doesn't want you to update the NS or any details about the domain.

ok: If there is no restriction on your domain, it’ll show the status code - ok.

inactive: If you have purchased a new domain and haven’t updated the nameserver yet, it’ll report the domain to be inactive. Ensure you update the NS to change the state.
